August 1999

The year 1999 marks a rare milestone in the medical field: the Stoxen family celebrates 50 years -serving the people of the Chicago area, making their practice one of the oldest in the United States.

At the same time, Dr. James Stoxen announced the grand opening of TeamDoctors, Treatment Centers, 6432 S. Pulaski Road, located in the Astoria Plaza in Chicago.

This move consolidates the two largest sports chiropractic/medical centers in the nation serving over 5000 new patients per year with gross billings over $7,000,000 annually.

The other two centers were called First American Health Care and were formerly located at 3347 W. 95th St. in Evergreen Park and 6225 S. Pulaski Road in Chicago.

The family has a tradition chiropractic care that began 50 years ago by Dr. Paul Stoxen at an office at 79th and Halsted Street in Chicago.

From there, the growth of the practice was astonishingly quick. Stoxen moved the practice to 95th Street and Homan Avenue in Evergreen Park in 1964.

In 1986, his son James, who had grown up talking to his father about the rapidly changing field of chiropractic medicine, joined Stoxen in practice.

Together, the father- and-son team began by offering full-spectrum patient care, adding medical doctors to their practice along with a sports rehabilitation center complete with health club style fitness equipment and a neuro-diagnostic center.

The Evergreen Park practice grew to be the largest in the United States, caring for nearly 4,000 patients per year. For the convenience (if their expanding patient population, the Stoxens opened a second office in 1993 on Pulaski Road.

In the first year, this facility became the second-largest sports chiropractic centers in the country, providing care to nearly 2,000 new patients the first year.

Currently, their practice consists of more than 20,000 South and Southwest Side residents over the last 10 years.

The Stoxens had eight associates, two medical physicians, two athletic trainers and 64 full-time employees.

The Stoxen family has always believed in sound preparation for the future to develop their practice.

They were the first family to actually spend their most valuable asset time by giving more than 1,000 free community health awareness presentations to more than 35,000 of their neighbors over the last six years through a program they sponsored with the help of more than 300 local businesses called “Dinner with the Doctor.”

Over the last 10 years, they have maintained constant attention to taking post-graduate seminars to stay on top of the latest health topics.

Dr. James Stoxen has written more than 100 articles for popular fitness publications, presenting his views on chiropractic aspects relating to injury prevention and treatment.

These views have been seen as valuable enough to give rise to his appointment to the prestigious editorial advisory board of Muscle and Fitness magazine.

This is a position he has maintained for the last nine years. He has served as the team and meet chiropractor for more than 30 national and world championships.

Even with this huge under- taking, the Stoxens still focused on giving back to the community.

Paul Stoxen volunteered his time for 17 years as chairman of the Shriners Hospital Committee for Crippled Children, sponsoring more than 1,600 children from low-income families who were desperately in need of orthopedic care.

Over the last year, Stoxen sold his Chicago center to an associate and relocated the Evergreen Park practice to 6432 S. Pulaski Road.

“I am getting back to my roots. I have opened up a lower overhead 2,100 square-foot center here in Astoria Plaza, which is a fair cry from the 10,000 square foot centers of the past, but it allows us to have much more personal contact with our patients,” he said “It will allow us to be closer to their needs.

Having a more streamlined center doesn’t require as much staff management time and paper work challenges.”
