What do a chiropractor, a meditation teacher, a truck driver and an “adventurpreneur” have in common with an outdoors enthusiast, a workplace wellness provider, a Lake Michigan circumnavigator and a paratriathlete?

They all share an interest in fitness, as did the rest of the 27 guests and journalists invited by Tribune host and health writer  Julie Deardorff to join Tuesday’s Trib Nation fitness community conversation lunch.

Their passions and personal stories were inspiring, and the conversation cast fitness in terms that included the pride of overcoming personal inertia, the discount it gets folks on health insurance premiums — and as a life-affirming element in a comeback from cancer.

That was how Jenn Gibbons couched Recovery on Water, a rowing team for breast cancer survivors. Jenn became the first person to row around Lake Michigan.

Jonathon Dugas of the Vitality Group hopes his company can improve the health choices of entire workforces. Trucker and runner Jeff Clark seeks to inspire longhaul truckers to adopt healthier habits on the road.

Impossible as it seemed, writer and personal trainer Nicki Anderson once had been an obese teen, a key factor in her passion to help others attain their own healthier lifestyles through fitness.

The collective posture of the room improved as personal trainer Victoria Gray described how to improve office posture — chin up and back, not jutting forward, and ears aligned with shoulders while sitting; middle fingers lightly touching outside trouser seams while standing. (Try it. Right?)

Womens’ Running and Runners World writer and “adventurpreneur” (I love that) Jenny Hadfield talked about the importance of community on “breaking the sitting disease.” Beside her, exercise physiologist Joel Woldt of Revolution Training Centers discussed the importance of aligning long-term diet, fitness and motivation to reduce health risk factors.

Meditation teacher Elesa Commerse drew a focus on mental fitness, while chiropractor and author Dr. James Stoxen DC described his passion for understanding the mechanics of movement.

For Susan Chamberlin, a board member of the National Outdoor Leadership School, fitness in the backcountry was about risk management.

Keri Schindler and Melissa Stockwell of the paratriathletic group “Dare 2 Tri” concluded by talking about the healing power of striving against odds. Stockwell’s observation after running races as an amputee was that people told her they could keep running because she did.

It made a motto real for her: “One person inspires many.”

And isn’t that what we all do for one another when we get fit?

Depression represents a major public health problem. It is estimated that up to 16 – 20% of the population has had depression at any one time and that 5 to 7% of the population is assumed to suffer from major depression. Studies have also shown that there is a correlation between chronic depression and the development of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’ and dementia in later life.

There is substantial literature linking inflammation with the risk for depression. The purpose of Dr. Stoxen’s presentation is to list the inflammatory mediators and their link to depression. Patients with inflammatory disorders such as MS, cardiovascular disorders, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Increase inflammatory cytokine expression and the development of concurrent psychiatric symptoms were initially observed after administration of cytokine therapy to patients afflicted with cancer hepatitis and MS. It has been found that patients with depression have high levels of inflammatory biomarkers. This suggests that inflammation can be a mediator for depression.

The purpose of this presentation is to review these studies and determine their potential to lead to interventions which may reduce the risks for inflammatory diseases of aging such as osteoarthritis cardiovascular disease and his symptoms related to varying degrees of depression.

Depression it is obviously a stress sensitive disorder, however the actual causal mechanism for their relationship is unknown. Research team led by Carnegie melon University’s Sheldon: has found that chronic psychological stresses associated with the bodies losing it’s ability to regulate the inflammatory response which can promote the development and progression of the disease called depression. So while inflammation can cause or be linked to depression, and the stress and depression can also be linked back to inflammation.

Aging is also associated with increased likelihood of chronic pain and inflammatory conditions. A part despite improving knowledge is of underlying mechanisms of chronic pain many patients who have chronic pain receive inadequate care both short-term and long-term. Also being  discussed are some novel ways to reduce chronic pain, chronic inflammation and disability dust reducing overall inflammation and possibly reducing the risk of the development and exacerbation of chronic depression.

Dr. Stoxen will also discuss the treatments, which can and may reduce depression. Currently antidepressants only produce remission in 30% of patients. The part of the problem is that the pathophysiology of depression has not been well understood and treatments are based on empirical data and not on the mechanisms or causes of action. Many research studies suggest that addressing pro-inflammatory cytokine production represents a possible strategy to treat depression besides the use of psychotropic drugs.

This will include the relationship between dietary influences and the risk of depression, and fatty acid supplementation for the fresh and add the adiposity risk factors for childhood and adult onset depression. Dr. Stoxen will also discuss the role of inactivity in inflammation and end depression as well as the effects of exercise and the increase and decrease of inflammation associated with exercise.

Dr. Stoxen will discuss natural ways to decrease levels of systemic inflammation both from a treatment and preventive approach to use with or without psychotropic drugs.

Running Throughout Middle Age Shown To Reduce Risk Of Disability In Later Life

The researchers surveyed 284 members of a nationwide running club and 156 healthy controls who were recruited from university faculty andstaff. All participants were age 50 or older when the study began in 1984. They completed a mailed questionnaire annually through 2005, providing information on exercise frequency, body mass index and disability level.

At the beginning of the study, runners were younger, leaner and less likely to smoke than controls. After 19 years, 81 runners (15 percent) had died compared with 144 controls (34 percent). Disability levels were lower in runners at all time points and increased in both groups over time, but less so in runners. At the end of the 21-year follow-up, in terms of disability, “the higher levels among controls translate into important differences in overall daily functional limitations,” the authors write. “Disability and survival curves continued to diverge between groups after the 21-year follow-up as participants approached their ninth decade of life.”

Regular exercise could reduce disability and death risk by increasing cardiovascular fitness, improving aerobic capacity, increased bone mass, lower levels of inflammatory markers, improved response to vaccinations and improved thinking, learning and memory functions, the authors note.

“Our findings of decreased disability in addition to prolonged survival among middle-aged and older adults participating in routine physical activities further support recommendations to encourage moderate to vigorous physical activity at all ages,” they conclude. “Increasing healthy lifestyle behaviors may not only improve length and quality of life but also hopefully lead to reduced health care expenditures associated with disability and chronic diseases.”

Furthermore, we believe that by celebrating the contributions of the fitness community the members of our hall of fame will be able to enjoy greater success in their line of work.

The people who dedicate their lives to the world of fitness make a profound difference in the lives of the people they work with as well as their communities. There are very few professions which call for your undying loyalty and commitment, much less professions like personal training which literally change lives on a daily basis. Fitness Professionals in this world are long overdue for an organization that is dedicated to celebrating the work that they do, and the outstanding example they set for us all.

He became a chiropractor at a young age of 24.  ”I did not want to just be a doctor.  I wanted to be a doctor AND a trainer of champions.”  The only way to learn the secrets of human performance was from the best of the best.  So, in his first 6 years volunteered his services at 60+ amateur and professional national and world champion sporting events at his own expense to work with and be a student of the worlds top athletes, coaches and sports doctors.

In 1991, he became one of the first chiropractors in the world to open a full rehabilitation and sports training center.  I found that the accepted approaches to training along with standard-of-care medical practices currently used just didn’t make sense to me. And they weren’t providing the long-term results I desired for my patients. There were conflicting schools of thought. For example, top trainers had athletes performing plyometric drills while doctors were telling patients that running, aerobics, jumping and other high impact activities, were bad for them.

I soon discovered that the conflicting information and advice I observed between doctors and trainers, and even among medical specialties, resulted from a misunderstanding of human mechanics. What’s more, I found these misconceptions could only be cleared up once we understand how the body functions in relationship to the world around it — a world governed by laws of nature engineering, physics and, most importantly, common sense.  The Team Doctors Training Center of Champions and my work with top athletes was the proving ground for the development of the Human Spring Model and Approach.

His insight into new and innovative examination, treatment and training approaches has earned him the reputation as a top speaker internationally in the fields of sports medicine, anti-aging medicine and other specialized areas of health. Dr Stoxen has organized and given over 1000 live presentations all over the world.  Dr Stoxen has lectured on treatment, training and progressive preventive approaches to over 50,000 doctors and scientists at medical CME / ACME accredited medical conferences around the world including China, Japan, Indonesia, UK, Germany, Monaco, Malaysia, Brazil, Spain, Russia, Australia, Thailand, Mexico, Columbia, South Africa and throughout the United States.

He has chaired medical committees for numerous international sports organizations and has personally trained more than 40 athletes to win national or world championships. Dr. Stoxen has spent years in the trenches working sometimes 16-18 hours a day for over 100+ days straight training and motivating his patients and athletes to become champions.  In the last 27 years it is estimated that he has consulted with almost 1,000 national and world champions and entertainers.

“What I learned is you cannot become a Personal Trainers Hall Of Fame member if you don’t challenge the system to improve. It means sticking your neck on the line knowing you may get hit a few times but if you want to be a champion then you have to take a few hits on your way up.” Dr. James Stoxen DC

JUST NEVER GIVE UP!

“I would like to congratulate Dr Ted Gambordella, Larry NorthDr. John Spencer Ellis and Scott Sonnon,  the other inductees. I am honored to be to be included with these legends.”

“It goes without saying that to be inducted into the Personal Trainers Hall of Fame is one of the highest honors that a trainer can receive. It should also go without saying that one does not come to accept this without the guidance, the direction, and the support of others.

I would like to thank the following people for their ongoing commitment and support:

Debbie Gibson Discusses Secrets To Staying, Looking And Feeling Young With Dr. James Stoxen DC

House of Blues
Chicago, IL
August 13, 2011

Dr James Stoxen DC with Debbie Gibson

Dr Stoxen: This is Dr Stoxen and here I am with Debbie Gibson! You know what? She looks fantastic. I was just remarking to her, yesterday on stage she looked amazing. You have a six pack.

Debbie: Thank You

Dr Stoxen: She is pretty strong too. We have to find out what do you do?

Debbie: Well for starters I have definitely been into fitness my whole life. I have worked out. But now, it’s all about how I eat. I started to do a program that my boyfriend, Dr. Rutledge has, called Better Than Lipo (BTL).  The program involves eating lean protein and vegetables. It’s cutting the sugar and the starch. What I learned through this program is when, why and how i’m addicted to certain foods. A lot of times what you think is hunger is emotion. No matter how much you eat, your never going to satisfy that void. Whatever it is. It might be that you need to meditate at that moment or take a walk. But it’s not always food. I also learned that if i’m going to pig out and eat a bunch of chocolate or chips, i’m going to do it, enjoy it, embrace it and the next day get right back on track.

Dr Stoxen: Yesterday you told me that you were connected to your body. You had a connection to how you feel that day and what you needed. I think that was one of the main thing that you felt this connection with your metabolism.

Debbie: Yes right. It’s getting to know yourself and what you need. I learned what my food intolerances were. The program helps you with that because you clean up your diet so much. Once you become so super clean, you feel every little thing. So if I eat something that sets me off then I know it instantly. Somebody asked Dr. Rutledge, “hey doc it’s really hard to find foods without sugar on the labels” so he said, “try eating foods without labels.”

Dr Stoxen: Right! Thats very good!

Debbie: Chicken, eggs, vegetables caveman. And if you trying to lose weight? My suggestion is, be really strict until you reach your goal. Because you can off set what you do in the course of five days. I know it is difficult and i’m not underestimating how difficult it is.

Dr Stoxen: People keep saying you have to eat healthy food well sometimes you eat TOO much healthy food.

Debbie: Yes watch volume too. I go out to a French restaurant with my boyfriend and we share a five course meal. We share everything and we eat slowly  and it’s real food and we are enjoying it at the same time. I think that has something to do with how you process it. It’s a feeling how I feel. It’s not about the scale. It’s about how I feel about my performance. How I feel for my man. There is something that keeps relationships alive when your taking pride in yourself. That discipline can be sexy. What it does it leave you with you. Your forced to confront your issues and thoughts I have an issue with wanting to busy my day. I used to have to turn on the TV or a radio on when I walked into a room. Now I like it calm and I don’t feel like I need to eat out of habit or the fun of it. It’s more to fuel me and for a specific purpose. I am aware and that is what the program did for me.

Dr Stoxen: It is so good to see you again.

Debbie: Good seeing you.

Dr Stoxen: Last year I saw you at the Chicago Pride Fest. When I saw you this year I thought to myself. How can you keep going on Tv to Broadway  to shows to auditions, meetings, stress. On the road can be so stressful.

Debbie: Yes you really have to be in control of your own life. I am in airports all the time. I literally have a chicken breast in a zip loc bag now that i’m taking to the airport.

Dr Stoxen: People don’t realize what they go through as artists. They get done with the show and somebody pulls a plane up and they get in and their in Chicago at 3:00 in the morning and….room service.

Debbie: What do you eat? When do you eat? You need to think ahead.

Dr Stoxen: People make excuses this one that one. I have children and you know what? You have those excuses and you have ten more on top of them.

Debbie: Yes and I want to put something else out there in terms of health, people don’t realize that even five or ten pounds over-weight you are increasing your percentage for all kinds of diseases.

Dr Stoxen: Thats right

Debbie: If you are a mom and you want to prolong your life and be with your kids it starts NOW.

Dr Stoxen: Thank you so much for spending the time with us.

Come back again next time for more tips from celebrities thank you!

Special Medical Report: “When Exercise Accelerates Aging!”
Dr. James Stoxen, DC
WGN, Channel 9
October 19, 2007
featuring Cindy Pender and Belma Michael Johnson, the Chicago host of “Designed to Sell.

Who says exercise can accelerate aging if its not done right?

It’s contrary to everything we have been told. One doctor says, “It Happens.”

“We used to always talk about exercising the beautiful muscles. The chest, the arms, the back, the thighs, the tri’s. Then they have completely neglected the foundation of the body. The foot and ankle.”

Everyone knows exercise is good, right? Only if you do it right.

“If we have a problem with the foundation of the body then every step we take will cause an accelerated wear and tear on the body. That wear and tear leads to inflammation and that inflammation can cause pain.”

It also ages the body. Reducing the inflammation can reduce the risks down.

Walking, exercising and wearing shoes all strain the feet and subsequently the body.

Restoring a healthy movement pattern which includes allowing the feet to stretch can change that.

“These are the supportive muscles that actually hold the arch up. We are going to re develop these muscles and that way the foot will become elevated and have more spring to it. Wiggle the arch and kind of break loose the spring.”

Get Back The Spring In Your Feet

Cindy Pender, a patient of Dr Stoxen, first gained weight and started walking to shed pounds. But her feet hurt.  She had chronic sciatic nerve pain and chronic pain and fatigue through out her body. “He told me that feet had colapsed and my arches were stiff and frozen. He would tell me the right things to eat to lose weight and how to properly exercise.”

Now, after she lost the chronic pain, lost the sciatica, and lost over 160 pounds with Dr. Stoxen’s diet and training program, she exercises pain free 3 days a week in the Team Doctors private gym. She also runs barefoot in the park with her dog Kayla, hikes, bikes, swims, and even climbed a 20 foot high tree. These are accomplishments she has made for the first time in 50 years.

Working the bodies foundation is the core of working out correctly.

“Designed to Sell” (HGTV) host Belma Johnson figured that out when his body started shutting down. He did not realize that the chronic pain in his shoulder for 30 years was constantly releasing inflammatory chemicals. The problem is, inflammation releases peptides called cytokines that damage cells. The American Heart Association, the Center of Disease and Control, and most experts now warn that over time chronic inflammation contributes to a higher risk for heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer’s, some cancers, and even the aging process itself.

“I came to see Dr Stoxen because I could not lift my arm past here.”

Now Johnson has his finger on the proper technique. Its made all the difference for the workout and the result.

“You know that old saying, it’s better to look good than feel good? The way Dr Stoxen has taught me is it’s better to look good and feel good…..

Tests show the athlete’s arch has lost its natural elastic spring. The result is exercise produces unbalanced forces that travel up the body. At first, the leg muscles compensate, but eventually they become exhausted and those forces damage the knee, hip, back, all the way up to the head. The inflammation is body-wide.

The dilemma is that people sometimes don’t even know they have fallen arches or a frozen arch spring mechanism causing this multi-joint inflammation, and that makes matters worse. Inflammation is most commonly associated with pain, but most of these multiple joint inflammatory conditions don’t cause pain. The inflammation is there, but it’s silent inflammation.

“How Exercise can Speed up the Aging Process” is the lecture subject Dr. Stoxen has been asked to present to over 20,000 physician attendees at the China FDA, China-Pharm conference in Shanghai, October 29 – 31st. Immediately following, Dr. Stoxen has been asked to lecture again on his treatment approach for reversing fallen arches to more than 2,000 physicians, scientists, and hospital principals at the China Health Industry Forum in Dong Guan near Hong Kong, November 1 – 4, 2007.

The Chicago doctor has lectured on this topic to over 20,000 medical doctors and scientists worldwide. He has published over 20 articles on biomechanics and treated hundreds of champion athletes and top celebrities.

BLUE Wiggle Anthony Field, 44, almost died on his 2003 honeymoon with wife Miki when a tooth infection spread to the bones in his face.

Field became infected after having work done on his teeth, which had always been weak. In the two years it took to diagnose the problem, he often had to put on his Wiggle smile while enduring pain and dizziness.

Field, 44, told the Herald Sun he was rushed into the operating room after collapsing on his 2003 honeymoon with wife Miki. ”I left it for a couple of years,” he said. “I had pain in my teeth for years.  ”I was having dizzy spells and fainting on my honeymoon. ”I collapsed and they took me to hospital and they had to scrape my bones from this infection. ”It was all through my skull, it was terrible.

“ The infection, with chronic back pain, made life hell for the Wiggle known for his love of tucking in healthy food. ”I was in this incredible pain,” he said.

“I was a mess. I just didn’t care about what I ate so I was overweight. I was puffy and lethargic.”Halfway through a concert I’d go off stage because my back was hurting so much I’d have to lie down on the ground beside the stage while the show’s on and get someone to sort of try to crack the back a bit.”

Now a picture of health, Field features in a four-week Herald Sun Health and Fitness series with fellow Wiggles Murray Cook, Sam Moran and Jeff Fatt.

The Wiggles have always promoted children’s health, and the series endorses healthy exercises and nutrition for pre-schoolers. Field kicks it off today, revealing how he transformed his diet after his 2003 health scare. He lost almost 10kg and is now pain-free. ”I went down the traditional medicine course, which was to get the operation, which fixed me, and that saved my life,” he said.  ”Then after that I went, ‘OK, how do I get myself not feeling so sluggish, to rehabilitate myself?’ ”

US chiropractor James Stoxen helped Field transform his diet and fitness, which helped ease the back pain.

Field now takes a special pull-up pole, which fits on a doorway, on tour so he can exercise. ”Every time you get off the ground either hanging on a bar or supporting yourself, you lengthen out your spine and you develop your core muscles such as stomach and your arms,” he said. ”You use all your body instead of just isolated body muscles.

“The father of three children under four now shuns soft drinks, processed and fried food, biscuits and cake. His only “unhealthy” indulgences are his daily coffee and an occasional lolly or bowl of ice cream.

“Once you get rid of the taste you’re fine,” he said.”It’s been four years since I had bread. I used to love bread. I used to eat a loaf of bread in one sitting.”

ICA’s Symposium on Natural Fitness Event: “Arnold Classic”
Columbus, Ohio, March 5-6, 2005

Speaking to over 400 participants, Dr James Stoxen DC of Team Doctors Chiropractic Treatment and Training Center delivered a presentation entitled Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention in Sports Medicine. The 12th Annual Symposium on Natural Fitness hosted hundreds of doctors of chiropractic from around the world, including doctors from 42 US States, five Canadian provinces, as well as doctors from France, Norway, Portugal, The Netherlands and Australia.

Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger was the featured speaker at ICA’s Symposium on Natural Fitness held March 5-6, 2004 in Columbus, Ohio. Dr Stoxen‘s connection to Arnold Schwarzenegger comes indirectly as Dr Stoxen was a member of the “Muscle and Fitness“ Editorial Advisory Board from 1991 – 2003. The “Muscle and Fitness” editorial advisory board contains some of the most highly respect experts in the world.

The Annual ICA Symposium on Natural Fitness once again brought together a unique assembly of over 400 enthusiastic doctors of chiropractic, students, and friends from around the world in a conference held March 4 – 5, 2005 in Columbus, Ohio. Sponsored by the Council on Fitness and Sports Health Science of International Chiropractors Association, the Symposium on Natural Fitness celebrated its thirteenth consecutive year of programs held in conjunction with the Arnold Schwarzenegger Bodybuilding Classic and Fitness Expo.

Dr. James Stoxen DC (right) with Arnold Schwarzenegger (left).

This leading educational event brings together top authorities in sports chiropractic with celebrities from the fitness world for a weekend filled with education, inspiration and communication. The Arnold Fitness Weekend, including one of the world’s prestigious annual bodybuilding events, the Arnold Schwarzenegger Bodybuilding Classic involves over 14,000 athletes participating in strength, fitness and martial arts competitions in over 20 different competitive events, including 8 Olympic sports.

The highlight of the 2005 chiropractic conference was a personal appearance by California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger. In his special presentation before the packed Symposium, Governor Schwarzenegger, global superstar and longtime enthusiastic chiropractic patient, spoke at length of the importance of chiropractic care for both himself and his family. Introducing his friend, co-star in the movie “Pumping Iron,” and training partner since 1965, chiropractor, Dr Franco Columbo, Arnold expressed his appreciation for chiropractic, telling the packed audience:

“It is an incredible profession, the most honorable profession, just wonderful to help that many people, that many patients. Chiropractic is about natural preventive health care. There is nothing that fits better together than chiropractic and weight training and sports and fitness, because it all has to do with this: how do we make bodies healthier, how do we become more energetic, more powerful more flexible and how to create longevity. What you are doing and I have experienced this for at least 20 years myself on my own body, means that whenever I have a problem – or even if I don’t have a problem – and I go to a chiropractor, my problems are gone for a long time.
